What Happens At An Outdoor Family Photoshoot

An Outdoor family photoshoot can seem a daunting experience for some. They feel like it will be really awkward having someone watching them and taking photos. Some worry whether the kids will cooperate, and others may worry whether they will look any good in the pictures.

These are all really valid concerns so I wanted to put together a post that lets you know exactly what happens at an outdoor family photoshoot with me so that it will hopefully alleviate any fears!

Before you arrive at the shoot I will have let you know exactly where to meet using either what3words or an identifiable location marker so you can easily find the location. Once we all arrive, we can have a little natter to get to know each other a bit better and help everyone (especially the kids) feel comfortable and relaxed while we head to our first photo spot.

Depending on how the kids are feeling at this point, I might either start getting some snaps of them or we can go straight into getting some images of the whole family together. I generally let the kids lead throughout the shoot to ensure we can get images that capture them at their best!

To make sure the photoshoot is an enjoyable experience for everyone and to capture those genuine, magical moments between the family, I often suggest a couple of games to play. Don’t worry, this isn’t anything awkward, just things like tickling, running races (mainly the kids!) Chinese whispers etc. As soon as I lift my camera, one of my sons has this habit of looking directly at it and pulling a weird face, no matter how many times I ask him not to! Distracting with games is a great way to stop this happening unless, of course, you want an album of the weirdest faces your kids can pull! It’s also a great way to capture you all looking your best, a genuine smile, laugh or loving face can really capture natural beauty.

Depending on where the photoshoot is taking place, we can explore the area a little, so the kids don’t get bored in the one spot. We can go and find some trees to climb, ducks to feed etc. This can really add some nice variation to your collection of images.

During an outdoor family photoshoot I always try and capture photos of the whole family together, some of just the kids and then some of each parent alone with each child. Doing this allows each person a break from being photographed as well as, again, including some variation in your final set of images.

The photoshoot generally takes 1 -2 hours. This means that there is always plenty of time to take a break if for example, someone needs the loo or a snack so there is no pressure to rush. Because I don’t have a set number of poses I am wanting to capture, it means we can just go with the flow and keep the shoot relaxed and personalised to your family.

The way an outdoor family photoshoot works does obviously vary with each photographer. I have just given you an idea of how my outdoor family photoshoots happen, so it is up to you to decide what is best for your family.
